Things to do in Monaco

Monaco was one of my favourite places I visited during my recent stint in Europe. The luxurious atmosphere made it feel like you were in a movie, and it was most definitely unlike any other place I've been in my life.

That being said, let's get into the list of things you might want to add to your list when visiting yourself.

1. Check out the Casino

The casino from the outside and inside

Probably the most common thing to do is stop by the casino. The architecture inside and out is absolutely stunning. Personally, I didn't have an interest in gambling, so I just stopped by to see the outside and went in to check out the lobby (which is free). The lobby of the casino opens at 10 am every day. If you are interested in gambling, the gaming rooms open at 2 pm each day and the entrance is 18 euros, which includes a 10 euro voucher.

It is also important to know that security will check your bags, regardless if you're entering the gaming rooms or just the lobby. Also if you do choose to enter the gaming rooms, there is a dress code. The website says "Patrons wearing shorts, bermudas, jeans with holes, sportswear, running shoes, flip-flops and sandals for men, beachwear and sleeveless shirts will not be admitted".

2. Stop by the hairpin turn

This one more so applies if you are a Formula One fan (which I am). The hairpin turn, which is a part of the racetrack for the annual Monaco F1 race, is located right outside the entrance to the Fairmont Hotel.

3. Go see the Prince's car collection

Some cars from the Prince's car collection

The Prince's car collection is a public display of cars, including vintage and racing cars. It's a must-see if you're a Formula One fan, as there are multiple F1 cars on display. Even if you're not an F1 fan, there are still lots of unique vintage cars that are cool to see.

Admission is 10 euros, but if you're a student you can get a discounted rate. Tickets don't need to be purchased in advance.

4. Walk around the port

Another fun thing to do in Monaco is walk around the port and check out the yachts. I found that most of the port was public access, and there were even some restaurants around. The port is also a great spot to take some pictures of the cityscape.

Practical information

How much time do I need to spend?

I think that making a day trip to the city is more than enough time to see all of the main sights.

How do I get there?

When I visited, I stayed in Nice and took the TER train there. Trains leave about every 20 minutes, the journey is just under 20 minutes, and it costs 4.40 euros. You can find and book your tickets here.

Where should I stay?

There are lots of great hotel options in Nice. I've listed a few below for each price range.

Luxury:

Mid-range:

Budget:

How do I get around once I'm there?

You can pretty much walk everywhere that you want to go as things aren't too spread out. There can be lots of stairs and hills though, so that may be something to consider. I believe other transportation options include taxis as well as a hop on hop off bus. There is no public transit.

Conclusion

Overall I really enjoyed my time in Monaco. If you're a Formula 1 fan, it is an absolute must-see, but even if you're not, it's still very cool to experience the luxurious atmosphere.
