As a self-proclaimed foodie and an on-and-off resident of Halifax for the last three years because of university, I've had a chance to try a lot of different restaurants in the city.
In this post, I'm going to highlight some of my favourite restaurants. I'll mostly focus on lunch and dinner restaurants, as I hope to write a separate post on brunch restaurants and coffee shops soon.
Ristorante A Mano
The Ravioli at A Mano
I had to list this one first because it's my all-time favourite restaurant in the city. Focusing on Italian cuisine, the menu predominantly features pasta and pizza. I've had a chance to try many of the pastas on the menu, and they are all incredible. I haven't tried many of the pizzas, and although I do think the pizza is good, I think the pastas are what you should go for.
They also make amazing homemade gelato and sorbet, and you can get a scoop of any of the many different flavours for dessert.
The Wooden Monkey
The Monkey Club with a kale caesar salad
This one is, in my opinion, the most underrated on this list. The Wooden Monkey specializes in integrating local produce into its creations. The cuisine leans on the pub-style side, but they have a wide variety of menu items.
I personally love the Monkey Club, but they are also really well-known for their Monkey Pita.
CHKN Chop
A quarter chicken with sides of mac and cheese and brussels sprouts
This restaurant is probably the most casual on the list, but that definitely doesn't mean the food is lacking. CHKN Chop's menu is centered around classic grilled chicken, but they also have options such as chicken sandwiches. The highlight for me here is the sides, the mac and cheese is amazing and the brussels sprouts are some of the best I've had in my life.
Morris East
The Italian Job Pizza
My go-to place when I'm craving a good wood-fired pizza. Morris East has a bunch of different pizzas, ranging from more traditional styles to unique creations. They also have some pastas and salads on the menu which are really good.
Antojo's Tacos and Tequila
Chicken and pork belly tacos
Anotojo's is THE Mexican place in the city. They have so many great menu items. Usually, I stick to the tacos, and pick out a variety based on what I'm feeling that day, but you can't go wrong with any of them. The restaurant hosts Margarita Mondays, where they have discounted (but still very good) margaritas and Taco Tuesdays, where all tacos are $4.
Mappatura
The trofie pasta
Mappatura is a bit more of a special occasion place for me personally. I would definitely consider it the most upscale dining experience on this list. The quality of service here is unmatched in my opinion. Aside from the service, the food is amazing too. It is a bit on the expensive side, but they focus on really traditional Italian cuisine, and they do it well.
